A ventral bulla osteotomy (VBO) in cats is a major surgery to access and treat middle ear problems like inflammatory polyps, chronic infections, or tumors by cutting into the bony tympanic bulla, often through the neck, to remove diseased tissue and allow drainage, though it carries risks like temporary Horner's syndrome or facial nerve issues.
We set a date for the surgery, January 13. I took her in and waited anxiously for a call from Dr. Barry. When she called, it was to say that there had been something unusual in her pre-op bloodwork. Her liver values were "off". They needed more detailed blood work, and an ultrasound of her abdomen.
Later the doctor called. again; no clear diagnosis. Liver looked okay on the ultrasound. An infection of some sort was suspected. They gave Elizabeth a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and we all crossed our fingers that the mystery condition would resolve, and that she could proceed with the surgery in a week or two.
Fast forward to today; March 2. She had bloodwork done again after treatment for her liver, but found that her condition had worsened! We consulted with her vets, homeopathic and holistic, and with her surgeon. Consensus was that she would get a liver biopsy to try to find the cause. That is being done now, at PECSCM ...Pet Emergency and Specialty Center of Marin. The bill for today was $1928.12. This all even before the surgery, and not counting her other doctor visits...Yes we need help!!
Please give what you can ...large or small, all deductible, all appreciated!!
