Food & Supplements
I make my own food. That way I know what's in it, it's always fresh, and I can add or subtract supplements as needed for specific conditions. here's my basic recipe:
My basic meal is made from meat, with bones and organs, put through the Tasin 108 grinder, on the widest setting. Google it, and buy it from One-Stop Jerky Shop. I leave some of the meat in chunks for them to chew on! I omit most of the skin; too fatty.
I usually use chicken, as it’s the least expensive, but with just a few cats, use duck, rabbit, beef, (the big beef bones won’t go through the grinder, so you have to use small bones and/or bone meal) and various meats. The animals all have different, nutritional components., valuable minerals etc.
I also add Solid Gold Seameal multi-vitamin as per the package directions. I add some broth to this, and mix thoroughly. As needed, I add probiotics & digestive enzymes (if anyone is on antibiotics or has GI tract problems), lysine if they have herpes in the eyes, etc. I warm the broth and put it over the food, to bring it up to the temp of fresh-killed prey J and give bones & chunks of meat once or twice daily. NONE of the food makers mention chunks and raw meaty bones!! Cats need to tear and knaw!! I also add bone meal to compensate fror the skewed ratio if muscle ("meat") to bone in commercially raised birds. Transfer Factor is a great supplement and Seacure …there are millions of good things…If you can, go to Holistic Hound in Berkeley, 510-843-2133, , or just phone. They will ship and even deliver! making food is a learning process…I'd be happy to consult with you about it!
Favorite treats, not too often: any dried fish (lots of salt, watch out) nori, canned mackerel, smoked fish !! (salt) fresh sautéed mackerel…crowd-pleaser! Cream cheese for some…but we are not at all big on treats. It’s not part of their normal diet. And they’re not like dogs…
And don't forget water!! We use the Aqua-Tru filter. It removes 125 toxins, including flouride. Far and away the best you can buy! The company sells minerals to put into the water after filtration. But a cat should get virtually all of her water from food!

- This site is fantastic, and full of great info on keeping your cat healthy!
- Ditto!! Also chock full of wonderful news and information!! Don't miss these sites!
- A consumer-funded site which has tested many brands for contaminants. with amazing results! Don't miss this information!!
- Dr. Marty is on my board of directors...good info, but I feel that folks will find making their own easier. in the long run...but take a look. Folks need to know how really bad the cat food industry is for your cat...and dog! Cats who come into my rescue turn around in two weeks, often...on my "real food"...
- This is an FDA site which explains the ins and outs and the requirements of food labeling:
- A source of supplements you can add to raw meat to complete the diet!
- A great source of raw food and how-tos.
- Another such source: makes it EASY! Even from scratch, a good diet is easier than having a sick cat!! and SO much less expensive!
- PET FOOD EXPRESS! I just noticed that this great store was left out! Big mistake! They do more for rescues and animals in general than the others put together. Bee Holistic has received thousands (!) of dollars in years past in cash and supplies. Their staff knows more, and their selection is the BEST! www/petfoodexpress.com
- If you can't fine an item at Pet Food Express (unlikely) Healthy Spot is another source: They have non-toxic toys and beds, raw food, supplements of all sorts, books, flower essences, and homeopathics. Several locations, Berkeley & SF. www.healthspot.com
