Found Baby Kittens?? What To Do!

First! If they are alive, they have a mother. Maybe you scared her off, or she's gone to look for food. Don't scoop them up and "rescue"' them. Bad for mother and babies! Put food (good food) and water out and watch and wait, from a distance where she won't be afraid to come to the babies. Lots of things to think about here, but before you do anything, you need to have a plan. If you do decide to take them, you must take mother and babies. If the mother is "wild", you'll need to trap her. Fix Our Ferals has traps to lend, and so do I. We show you how to do it, or find a trapper who can help. If the babies are small enough, they will not be afraid of you, and so if you need to trap the mother, they can be used as 'bait'. Sounds cruel, but it's the fastest way to get them all. We can explain how to do this. If the mother is friendly, you can put them all into a secure carrier (not a box) and take them to safety.
The situations are all different, and usually complex...so I'd be happy to talk with you. 510-237-1190.
If you are certain that the mother can't be found, and/or the babies are in danger of dying (little ones can go quickly) and if you've determined they need help immediately, here's a good link to how to care for them after you take them home. but do continue to look for the mother! She's out there, miserable and distraught...and her milk may be getting impacted: dangerous and painful. Have pity, and do your best to find her.

ON SURRENDERING AN ANIMAL:
I can often help solve the problem which has led a caller to want to give up on her or his animal. This site has lots of great information, and I'm always happy to consult with you. You can schedule a consultation at 510-237-1190. It's $25.00 for 20 minutes, $50.00 for an hour, and $15.00 for follow-up questions. If you can not afford it, I'll help anyway. The one, maybe most important, bit of advice is to call an intuitive animal communicator! She (usually a woman) can get the animal's side of the story!

A word about toxoplasmosis!! Not so easy to acquire!
Indirect method of contacting 'toxo' is by ingestion of undercooked meat or ingestion of vegetables not properly cleaned. The indirect method of infection is by far the most common. Getting it directly from your cat is actually rather difficult and requires some questionable hygiene practices on the part of the human. Having said all that, we can conclude that there is no reason at all to get rid of your beloved kitty if she is infected, even if you're pregnant or will be. Keeping healthy hygiene habits such as cleaning the cat litter on a daily basis and washing hands thoroughly is enough to prevent direct infection.

Flea control...a biggie!
Diatomaceous earth can cut into the "insides" of a cat and should be avoided. It also cuts into the tiny animals in the earth. There are lots of non-toxic treatments, internal and external. Google non-toxic flea treatments, or call Healthy Spot in Berkeley, formerly Holistic Hound, at 510-843-2133. Also nematodes kill flea larvae in the ground. They also kill other small, tiny animals, so I'm still checking out their use...but a healthy body goes a long way toward repelling fleas (and all parasites) :-)
